SECOND DAWN
A DISPLAY FONT & POSTCARD

This year in October me and my wife decided to visit Ankara, Türkiye to celebrate the 102nd Anniversary of the Republic. During that time, we also visited couple of museums, which I saw something that will inspire me for this whole project.

Mefkûre Cards, War of Independence Museum. Ankara/Türkiye
Mefkûre, meaning “Ideal”, are set of postcards drawn by Harita Albay Selahaddin Düzgünoğlu during the War of Independence. These cards symbolizes the Spirit of Independence, National Consciousness and the Belief of Victory and were sent all around in Türkiye to inspire the people back in the day. You can learn more about the artist and the artworks here.
Inspired by these cards, I decided to make my own. I used our weekly Dungeons and Dragons campaign’s setting and imagined if one of the countries in there also had a need of those cards.

Resist the Sun
In our weekly Dungeons and Dragons campaign, Thenia Republic is a country which recently evolved into Thenian Empire after a successfull coup. The Republic’s unofficial symbol was wheat and the the Empire has taken the Sun as a symbol. Thats why the postcard is titled “Resist the Sun”

During the process I took a special care about the font. I wanted it to look old but regal and carry the weight of the meaning. I made bunch of different letters to try out and finally decided the one. And thus born the Second Dawn, display font.

All glyphs
Named after the Resistence group in our Dungeons and Dragons game, Second Dawn is an All-Caps, Handdrawn Display Font with numbers, few accented letters and basic punctiation marks. I wanted it to have the regal feeling and faint Art Deco vibes and combined it with the shape language of the Wheat stalk.
